Meet Our People - Jake Ryman, Videographer

Aug. 4, 2022 - Shortly after graduating with a BSc (Hons) in TV Production Technology, Jake joined Datapath as our Videographer and Graphic Designer. You may have seen his work on our social media channels. We spend some time getting to know the person behind the lens.

Welcome and thank you, Jake. So how did your love for video bring you to Datapath?

I was drawn to Datapath as not only could I work with my passion for video, but also video related technology. I take a great interest in the technology behind my camera gear, editing workstation and within my hobbies. I also find the fact that Datapath doing all its own R&D, developing their products from start to finish fascinating. So, this role was a perfect opportunity to not only practice my craft, but to be surrounded by an innovative tech-focused environment.

What does a typical day of creating content look like?

No day is really the same due to the variety of projects that I could be working on. Since joining Datapath I’ve used a wide range of styles and techniques to create content. I’ve worked on everything from motion graphics, editing, camera operation and more recently 3D modelling and animation. It’s a great opportunity to practice in areas which I didn’t expect to develop before joining the company.

Favourite parts of your job?

Getting hands on with the more practical elements of my job is a big highlight for me. I find great satisfaction in bringing all elements of production together to create videos that are pleasing to look at and engaging.

Putting the extra effort in production really helps bring the video to life when you get into the postproduction such as editing and colour grading. There’s also a decent amount of variety due to the many applications the content has within Datapath.

Video content is an increasingly important part of the marketing mix – where do you take inspiration and how do you keep up with the latest methods and technology?

Keeping yourself immersed within trends and taking inspiration from experienced people and masters in film making, I believe, is the key to creating good-looking and engaging videos. I regularly develop skills in new areas of production and post to constantly evolve the quality of my work. Even something as simple as watching your favourite TV series gets your mind thinking about how you can work towards bringing yourself up to that level of quality and creativity.

How do you like to spend your time, when not behind a camera?

This is usually where people find me either interesting or incredibly boring. I’m really into driving and with that comes modifying my supercharged Mini Cooper and (mostly) repairing it. So, my typical weekend consists of upgrading parts or replacing the ones that I have broken and then moaning about how the thing never works!

I am lover of the great outdoors, so when I’m not working on my car, you can find me taking a long off-route hike in the Peak District (UK).

Tell us something that people won’t know about you

I enjoyed a three-year stint living down under in Adelaide, Australia, moving back to the UK when I was 11.
